Introduction to Costa Rican Folk Art
Haiti and Nicaragua are known for their art primitif. Less known is the existence in Costa Rica of this country's self-taught artists.
The customs and colourful traditions of this country are radiantly expressed in the arts and crafts of the people. At Galería Namu, we have sought out a diversity of this natural talent. The effect in the gallery is a symphony of joyful colour and a very distinct vision of the world in which these artists live.
Here you will find art from two groups of country women taught to paint thanks to a Peace Corps initiative more than 10 years ago, art from street children in a special program in San José, local artists who capture the particular flavour of their geographical area, or artists who capture the sense of bygone days. Also exhibited are artists who are experimenting with mixed media of their own creation, be it papier mache, sand and acrylics, batik on paper, carving driftwood, among others.
