Huetar

Huetar

HUETAR: This tribe today is reduced to a scattering of villages in the Central Valley area with little cultural evidence of its great past. Some knowledge still exists of medicinal plants, spiritual history, grass and reed weaving and pottery.

Again, it is mostly the women of the tribe who have taken responsibility for trying to recapture some of the art/craft ways of their forefathers.

Their reduced numbers today marks a strong contrast to the days of power and glory of this regionally influential and organized tribe prior to the pre-European contact, when they were a formidable tribe in this part of the isthmus. One can still visit a more than 1,000 year old political/ceremonial stronghold, which was in Huetar territory when the Europeans started to explore their territory, called Guayabo - a well excavated example of Costa Rica’s several pre-European monumental sites .
