Teribe

Teribe

BRIBRI, TERIBE and CABECAR:The homeland of these tribes was originally the Caribbean side of the country where the majority of these people still live - the Bribri tribe generally occupied lowland areas, while the Cabécar tribe preferred the isolated heights of the Talamanca Mountain range.

Over the last century, migrations of these tribes took place west to the Pacific coast via old foot trails across the mountains where Bribri and Cabécar settlements today are found.

Although these tribes display distinct language forms, they share the same spiritual beliefs, employed the same weapons and used the same craft for river travel, had similar architecture and other forms of cultural manifestation.

The best representation of the arts of these tribes in the gallery come from the Bribri and Cabécar. Among Teribe tribal members, some women have recently formed artesanía groups and we look forward to more work from these sources. Please ask us about the eco/ethno-tours that we coordinate with the village of Yorkín – an isolated Bribri community.
