This carved and painted (balsa) wood mask was worn in the indigenous village of Rey Curre in the southern Pacific coast watershed of Costa Rica, in their traditional ceremony Danza de los Diablitos. An evocative mask design - the "River Shaman" - speaks to tribal history and lore. The Brunka people have always lived near the mighty Terraba River in the southern Pacific coast watershed of today's Costa Rica. In its lower course, the Terraba is home to the respected and feared crocodile and caiman.This carved and painted (balsa) wood mask was worn in the indigenous village of Boruca, donned by a participant in their traditional, annual ceremony: Danza(Juego) de los Diablitos.
